Martin County residents often call it the best kept secret in Florida. The County Commission, known for its anti growth philosophy, has restrictions against building anything over 4 stories. In April 2008, Martin County was reported to have the second highest per capita income ($56,741) in the state, just behind Collier County (Naples) and in front of famed Palm Beach County. According to the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis, more than half of this income comes from interest earned on dividends, stocks and bonds. The President of the Stuart/Martin County Chamber of Commerce said, "We certainly have a nice balance of business growth, a respect for the environment and an understanding that we don't want to grow too fast."
